For many years, Anacapa Yacht Club and Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club have fostered a successful junior and youth sailing program, under the excellent tutelage of Gene Beville.
Our aim now is to implement a pilot program. Our AYC Race Committee will oversee and help place our junior sailors on Wet Wednesday racing keel boats. This will start August 3, 2016 as we transition interested youth sailors on specially selected boats willing to work with our youth. Participants will have opportunities to rotate through different boats and the race committee.
The advantage to both the youth sailors, and our Channel Islands sailing community are obvious. To adapt the old adage, we have adopted “It takes a community to raise a sailor.”
The aim is to utilize Wet Wednesday, PHRF Saturday, and TGIS races to give youth the opportunity to progress as far as they wish in the sport we love.
Members from Anacapa Yacht Club, Ventura Sailing Club, Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, and Channel Island Yacht have offered to participate and support this program. No doubt this effort will become very much a community project.
We also wish to encourage parents of those youth involved to also participate in any way that they may prefer. As available, parents will be given the opportunity observe their youth sailors on the water courtesy of Joe and Joanne Underwood.
